Many superstitions is Russia are so strong that they became an integral part of everyday life. If you communicate with Russian people for some time, you will notice how these Russian superstitions affect people's behavior, the way they talk, do things and interact with each other. Today I will discuss the most common everyday Russian superstitions and customs which resulted from long and rich Russian traditions.
One popular belief in Russia is that if you suddenly meet and do not recognize someone you know very well, that person will become very rich. So they usually say “Богатым будешь” - “You will be rich” which in many cases is just understood as “I didn't recognized you”.
Seeing a black cat crossing your path is probably one of the most believed-in Russian superstitions which is also well-known in other countries. However, a person with empty buckets on your path is also a bad sign. If someone walked with empty buckets right in front of you, it is advised not to take their pass and try to get around it. However, a person with full buckets is a sign of wealth and prosperity – you should follow or cross the path of that person before someone else does it.
Another popular belief in Russia is that if two or more people are walking outside and letting a tree or a pole pass between them, it may cause a big argument or discord between them. If they did that accidentally, they should say “Hello” to each other as soon as they pass a tree or a pole.
Returning home if you forgot something is supposed to be a bad sign. If you forgot something at home and have to go back to take it, you should look at your reflection in the mirror to ward the bad luck off.
Russians try not to speak about future achievements and good luck because according to the popular belief talking about it may hex it. When one is talking about something good that happened, is happening or will happen in the future, it is common for this person to either knock on wood 3 times or spit 3 times over the left shoulder. It is done in order to prevent a hex and make what is desired come true.
However, when one is talking about something very undesirable or bad, the listener would often say in Russian “Типун тебе на язык!”, which is generally translated as “Curse that tongue of yours!”. This expression is not meant to be offensive at all but is rather used as a spell for prevention of evil and bad luck.
In Russia people never mend clothes or sew a button on a piece of clothing while wearing it – those who do that will “sew up” their mind and memory.
Stepping on somebody's foot is a bad sign which means that you may have a quarrel with the person whose foot you stepped on. That is why you should let that person step on your foot gently 3 times to prevent the future argument or discord.
One should never step over another person, especially children, because it will prevent the person from growing. If you step over someone, you should step over that person again.
In Russia while telling a story about a bad injury that happened to another person, you should never demonstrate it on yourself or someone else with the help of gestures, as it is supposed to draw bad influences. However, if the gesture is already made, you should grab the imaginary bad influences with a hand and throw them away.
Picking up coins from the road is not recommended in Russia. The popular belief is that such coins may carry negative energy if they were thrown by a bad person and cause sickness.
