In order to really enjoy a Russian banya (Russian bathhouse), you need to follow certain rules which will let you feel better and avoid bad consequences after a Russian steam bath. People with bad heart and poor health should not take a Russian steam bath, or they should do it only at moderate temperatures. However, Russian banya is also know for its strong curative effect. It especially helps people with respiratory problems and clears the body of chemical waste.
First of all do not eat before going to banya. If you have eaten, wait for at least 2-3 hours before you go.
Do not start taking a Russian steam bath at high temperatures from the very beginning. If you have such a possibility, gradually raise the temperature over time because the body should get used to it.
Usually there are several shelves to lie on in a Russian bathhouse. At the beginning lie on a lower shelf and then you can move up where it is warmer after you feel that you can. By the way, it is better to lie down in a banya than to sit, so that the whole body gets evenly warm.
Do not forget to wear a special hat or a shower cap because the hair shouldn't get hot!
When you are in a Russian bathhouse, breathe with your mouth open.
Do not try to increase the temperature if you are not feeling too well. Banya is not about setting new records in human capabilities. It is about enjoying its healing effect.
Usually Russian people take several steam baths and rest in a colder room in between. It is normal to take up to 3-4 steam baths, but you should always listen to your body and not go inside if you are dizzy or not feeling well.
When you rest after a steam bath, drink some liquid to have your body well-hydrated. Even though Russian people prefer drinking beer in their banyas, alcohol is not recommended. It is better to drink hot tea or fruit juice.
