Case Study: Men in Love with Scammers

Let's talk about this strange and mysterious phenomenon - men in love with scammers. This kind of relationship reminds of a relationship between a pray and its predator. The subject matter raises some important questions:

Why do some men blindly believe anything they are told on the Web?

Why for some men it is easier to believe in existence of a beautiful female researcher with model-like appearance than to fall in love with a real but not so attractive woman?

What makes men send money to someone they don't know?

Here are some most common reasons.

Looking in Wrong Places

Let's take this situation as an example: a guy meet a girl on a dating site, figures out that she is a scammer, continues dating other women on the same site and suddenly realizes that every girl on that site is a scammer.

The thing is that if the scammer who has already tried to deceive you once sees you again on the same site, he/she will try to deceive you again. It's because the scammer already knows what you are likely to believe and what will trigger your suspicion. So, why look for new victims and study them, if there is an opportunity to correct mistakes of the past and try again with someone the scammer already knows? That is why if you met scammers on a dating site and managed to figure it out, be extremely cautious because they will be back for you but with a different “mask” (pictures). However, the truth may also be that a dating site you like is a scam site, which uses fake profiles to get your money.

Lack of Knowledge about the Country

You need to know a thing or two about Russia to be able to understand how things work there.

Example: a guy fall in love with a beautiful young Russian teacher with professional pictures in her profile on a dating site. Is it possible that she is a scammer? Yes, it's very likely. The very fact that a poor Russian teacher whose salary is not enough to buy a good camera or even hire a photographer (in Russia teacher's salaries are very low) has professional pictures in her profile is a very suspicious fact and should make any man be cautious. Besides, if you consider that a woman's beauty is a good enough reason for you to trust her, you'd better be careful!

Let's take another example: a guy has corresponded with a girl over the internet for several months and now she says she need money to come and visit him. First of all, if she is a single, young and attractive girl, no embassy of most developed countries will give her a visa to come and visit their single citizen. That's just the way it still works. And secondly, it is always better if the man comes and visits the girl in her country. This way he will get to know her better and won't risk anything.

Not Being Realistic

Example: a guy meets a successful Russian engineer with an angel-like look who seems to be crazy about him. Is she a scammer? Very likely indeed. If successful girls in your country pass right by you, why do you think a successful Russian woman would not? If she is smart she is most likely aware of the fact that if she moves to your country she will have to reestablish her name and career and start all over again. That is why if she is real, as soon as you start planning your future together and go beyond writing on a dating site, she will start studying your language to perfection, inquiring about good business schools in your area and asking about major companies of her field that could hire her when she moves. If she doesn't even try to learn your language better, are you sure she is what she says she is?

Of course it is easy to judge about someone's mistakes when you know that this or that person turned out to be a scammer. However, it is better to learn from others than to be deceived by a scammer.
